About us
The BASE facility was established to provide Australian scientists with rapid and reliable access to mRNA–LNP technologies. As leaders in mRNA research and manufacturing, we have developed an mRNA–LNP platform supporting a wide range of experimental and translational applications.
BASE scientists have designed thousands of mRNA constructs for applications including infectious disease vaccines, personalised cancer vaccines, immunotherapies, cell therapies, rare genetic diseases, gene therapies, and many others. The quality and performance of our mRNA–LNPs have been validated across diverse experimental systems, cell types, and tissues.
The BASE facility is located within the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) at The University of Queensland (UQ), where it benefits from a world-class research environment. BASE is a core facility within the national RNA Products capability supported by Therapeutic Innovation Australia (TIA), part of Australia’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).
Our Research
BASE scientists lead an innovative research program developing new mRNA technologies and medicines. Our expertise spans bioinformatics, molecular and cellular biology, pharmacology, and clinical translation, where we support a pipeline of mRNA medicines currently in preclinical development. Our research includes mRNA sequence design software, cell-free manufacturing processes, targeted lipid nanoparticle delivery, and nanopore sequencing-based quality analysis.
BASE research laboratories are located on Level 3 of the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN). These laboratories support the training and supervision of researchers undertaking projects in mRNA science at The University of Queensland.
Our manufacture
BASE operates a high-throughput, purpose-built mRNA-LNP production facility on Level 6 of the Translational Research Institute (TRI). Located within the Boggo Road Innovation Precinct, the facility is embedded within Queensland’s growing translational research ecosystem and enables close collaboration with our academic, clinical, and industry partners.
This facility manufactures thousands of high-quality mRNA–LNP formulations annually, ranging from small research scales to larger batches supporting translational programs. Our segregated production suites are supported by a dedicated bioinformatics design team and adjacent quality control laboratories to ensure reliable and reproducible manufacture of high-quality mRNA–LNP medicines.
BASE is expanding its large-scale clinical manufacturing capability at TRI as part of the UQ PM1 Biomanufacturing Initiative. This initiative will upgrade our laboratory and cleanroom infrastructure to GMP-aligned facilities and qualified quality control assays, enabling BASE to support the development of mRNA–LNP products for Phase I clinical trials.
